ODE TO A SAUSAGE

Created you were not, oh sausage,
for gourmets.
They cannot know your gift of bliss,
in rich tomato gravy swathed;
your intimate appeal they sadly miss.

Seductive bangers on a plate
with mash,
you have sustained me over many years,
given me your strength and health
and passion.
Life with you has held
no modern fears.

I do not crave for larks' tongues, caviar,
for royal honey from the queen of bees,
nor pate de fois gras.
Nor crisp bread, celery sticks and cottage cheese.

My doctor has forbidden beer and fags,
and deprived me of,
alas,
my dearest snags.
